The American Bar Association is the largest national organization of attorneys in the United States. Membership in the ABA is voluntary. The ABA has its own ABA Web Site from which additional information can be obtained, so this page will give only a few highlights.

Following are only a few of the ways in which the ABA serves the legal profession and the public at large:

Providing educational services to attorneys, including continuing legal education courses, books and periodicals
Providing specialized legal information to practitioners through specialized sections, divisions and forum committees relating to particular areas of the law
Making improvements in the law by working with courts and legislators
Assisting state and local bar associations
Educating the public about the legal system
Promoting less expensive means of resolving disputes than through litigation, including arbitration and mediation
Promoting ethical conduct by attorneys
Providing assistance to attorneys in adapting technological developments to the practice of law
Providing personal benefits to attorneys such as discounted credit cards, long distance telephone service, and car rental and travel programs
Making insurance and retirement programs available to attorneys at group rates through a related organization, The American Bar Endowment
